Thankful Tuesday

Thankful Tuesday

Thankful Tuesday

Today to launch our Amber Flag Initiative for the coming year and to mark World Mental Health Day we celebrated gratitude in our school.  Pupils were welcome to bring in ‘Traditional Games’ like card and board games. The meaning of this activity was to help our pupils focus on being thankful for what each of them have which is much more important than the need to have the must-have game or piece of technology. As well as this, it was to help gain a sense of gratitude about ourselves instead of comparing ourselves to others.  Activities and discussions about being ‘thankful’ were explored throughout our classes during the day.

Also, during the day we began work on a  few whole school art displays. One was entitled “The Gratitude Tree” which will be on our Amber Flag display board. Each pupil sketched activities in their lives that they are thankful for. As well as this, classes thought of things in their lives that bring them great “joy”. Here pupils were asked to discuss and then write or draw about it.  Well done to our committee for compiling this amazing artwork.

During all these activities, we mixed up our classes to create a sense of community in our school. This meant that more junior class members were paired with a more senior class pupil. We are sure many new friendships will be formed in our school community as a result of these initiatives.

We fundraised for Pieta House as part of “Thankful Tuesday” too and we were delighted with the response from the school community. We raised a total of €232 for Pieta House, as always many thanks for your support.

European Week of Sport

To celebrate European Week of Sport, our classes learned about a sport, dance, or game from a different country.

There was great fun had by all through this activity, well done to all students for being good sports, and huge thanks to all teachers for their creativity in this initiative.

Junior Infants had great fun playing a game called ‘Agalmata’ which is Greek for statues. One player stands in the middle with their eyes closed and counts to 10. They can open their eyes at any time and shout Agalmata! Any statues that are caught moving are out.

Senior Infants played a game that is played in Italy called “Guardie a Lardi”. It’s a fun version of cops and robbers and there was great excitement during the game.

1st Class took a closer look at Olympic handball known as European handball originated in Northern Europe. 1st class played a few mini games on our newly developed astroturf.

2nd Class played a very fun game that originated in Denmark called “Danish Longball” which is a fun mix of rounders, football and dodgeball.

4th Class celebrated this week with Finnish Molkky, French petanque, and Danish Longball!

5th Class learned the words and dance of the New Zealand ‘Haka’.

6th Class played an Indian game called ‘Throwball’, which is a very simple but enjoyable game. Catch and throw, if the ball hits the ground on the other side, it’s a point.

Well done to all involved during this fun initiative.

Camogie and Hurling Blitz

Camogie and Hurling Blitz

Camogie and Hurling Blitz

Our 5th and 6th class girls and boys teams took part in the recent Sciath na Scoil camogie/hurling blitz held in Clonakilty GAA club this morning.

This was a historic day for our school as it was the first time that we had entered into this hurling and camogie competition.

Well done to all involved in the organisation of this competition and it is great to see it happening here locally.

Today was a grading blitz to see what school teams would be suited to play against in the future.

Our boys and girls teams played Gaelscoil Clonakilty, Laragh NS, Newcestown NS, and Timoleague NS.

They showed great skill, endeavor, and attitude in all their games.

Well done everybody for giving your all this morning smile
