On Friday 14th October, 5th and 6th classes were given a fantastic presentation by local historian Michael O’Mahony, based on the life of Dick Barrett. Michael is a direct descendant and he provided us with an amazing insight to the life and death of Dick Barrett , who was a teacher, a soldier and a patriot.
Dick Barrett was born in the parish of Enniskeane and Desertserges in December 1889. He attended Knocks National School, which has now been closed for a number of years. At that time, Knockskeagh NS provided advanced classes for pupils who intended to pursue a career in the Civil Service, teaching or such professions. Dick finished 6th class in Knocks in 1904 and then transferred to Knockskeagh from 1904 to 1909. He was engaged in Knockskeagh as a monitor teacher during that time – they were students who were preparing for the Teaching Training College. Having completed his tenure in Knockskeagh, he secured a first grade scholarship for a two year course at De La Salle College, Waterford. Dick qualified as a teacher in 1913 with a First Class Diploma and was placed in the First Division by the Board of Education.
So, Knockskeagh played a huge role in his career and educational development.
Both 5th and 6th classes will be completing projects based on Dick Barrett over the next two months and the finished products will be put on display for us all to see in the school Halla in December.
Thank you Michael for your very informative visit, we look forward to getting started on the projects!

Today to launch our Amber Flag Initiative for the coming year and to mark World Mental Health Day we celebrated ‘Gratitude’ in our school.
We fundraised for Pieta House as part of our annual Amber Flag initiative during the day and we were delighted with the response from the school community. We raised a total of €232 for Pieta House, many thanks for your support.
AS part of ‘Thankful Tuesday’ pupils were welcome to bring in ‘Traditional Games’ to school like board games and card games. The meaning of this activity was to focus on being thankful for what we have and what we are already which is much more important than the need to have the must-have game or piece of technology or compare ourselves to others.
We mixed up our classes for these games activities and for the artwork organized by our Amber Flag Committee so each younger pupil could connect and get support from older pupils during the activities. We are sure there will be many friendships that stem from todays activities.
Also, during the day pupils were encouraged to move, be mindful, and get creative. We completed a whole school art display called “The Gratitude Tree” where each pupil sketched activities in their lives that they are thankful for.
As well as this, classes focused on positive things in their lives. They wrote and drew about things in their lives that made them feel happy. Both of these will form part of an art display in the coming weeks. Well done to our committee for compiling this amazing artwork.

Space week took off with a 3….2….1….BLAST OFF! 🚀🚀
We celebrated ‘Space Week’ from Monday 3rd of October to Friday 7th of October.
Everyone was incredibly busy learning all about Space and making their own creations, ranging from aliens to rockets to spaceships to the galaxies. 🌍 ☄️🚀
We also used a “Space Booklet” for all pupils in our school. The Space booklet was packed full of space facts, information, puzzles, colouring sheets, and much more. During the week, the pupils worked on their booklets which led to some fascinating discussions about Space.
As well as this there were many Space Week themed activities in all classes during ‘Space Week’ this year including; space engineering projects, art, poetry, experiments, space facts, and much more.
Our school Space Walk is full of strange looking beings. 👽🧑🚀Here is a snapshot of some of the Space activities in the classes during Space Week 2022. 🚀
