Trip to Darrara Agricultural College 2025

On Tuesday 11th March, 2025, Senior Infants headed off to Darrara Agricultural College to be shown around, and what a treat it was! The sun was shining all day for us!

We got to sit up on the tractors 🚜, it didn’t matter to us whether they were John Deere or New Holland. 😊 Then we went to visit the new lambs that have been born and best of all, we all got to hold one. 🐑 They were really cute! After that, we went to see the new baby calves. 🐮They were too big for us to hold, but we were able to rub them. We were very quiet so not to frighten them. We learned what happens in the milking parlour and saw all the machines that are needed so we can have milk on our tables every day. 🥛 Lastly and definitely the best part was everyone got to “drive” a tractor in their real life simulator. It was amazing to get that practice in.

We definitely have some young budding farmers amongst us👨‍🌾. How lucky are we to have this service practically on our doorstep! Thanks to everyone at Darrara Agricultural College for all your advise and guidance. We will most certainly be back! 😊

Walk on Wednesday

Walk on Wednesday

Last week, all classes learned about the importance of Road Safety, with every pupil receiving a high visibility jacket 🦺 or high visability armband. For our next GreenSchools flag, we will be working on the theme of Global Citizenship – Travel. This focuses on reducing our carbon footprint and so as a school, we looked at walking. We discussed the importance of walking for the environment but also for our own health and all classes took to the track at different times during Wednesday.
We borrowed some traffic lights🚦 and learned how to correctly use them, whilst being a pedestrian or in a vehicle. There were a few games of “Red Light – Green Light” which added to the excitement and the children were pretending to be cars, trucks, vans and pedestrians. All children relected back over the Safe Cross Code and discussed how to safely cross the road.
Always wear a high vis. 🦺 Be safe, be seen!

West Cork Rapid Response Critical Care Jeep Visit 2024 🚨

On Monday 20th May, we were very lucky to have the West Cork Rapid Response Critical Care jeep visit us in school. 🚑 This is a fantastic resource in our community and it is completely voluntary. How lucky are we to have this resource on our doorstep if we need it?

All children were invited to explore the jeep and see each of the different compartments that the jeep has. It was smiles all around! 😊

Thanks to Kate, Betty and Liam for their care and attention and for giving up their morning to come in to us. We really appreciate it! The sound of the sirens impressed everyone! 🚨

Wellness Week 2024

Wellness Week 2024

Wellness Week 2024

Wellness Week 2024

Last week we celebrated Wellness Week in our school. Some of the activities enjoyed included, mindful nature walks,  morning shake-ups, collaborative art,  yoga, feel-good lunchtime music, and practicing gratitude.

The lovely mix of activities certainly put a “spring” in our step before the long weekend. Well done to the pupils and staff involved in organising this enjoyable week.

Wellness Week Activities

Whole School Art “Find your wings and fly”

Each pupil decorated a feather which will create wings as part of a whole school collaborative art piece. The objective was to focus pupils’ minds on believing in their unique qualities and strengths. Well done to members of our Fourth Class who assisted some younger classes in their creations.

Gratitude Jars

Each pupil decorated a jar with things that they are grateful for in their lives. Our Amber Flag reps decorated each classroom door with each pupil’s beautiful creations. We all adopted an “attitude of gratitude” during Wellness Week.

Mindful Moments

Each class agreed on a time for daily meditation. We have found it really is nice to take time for ourselves sometimes.

Feel Good Dance

We danced during lunchtime to feel-good music from our two speakers. It was great fun  😊

Drop Everything and Colour (DEAC)

On Monday afternoon, we engaged in some mindful colouring in each class.

Morning Shake-Up

The Active and Amber Flag reps directed exercise sessions with school pupils on Friday morning during Wellness week.

Yoga

All classes enjoyed Yoga in our school hall during Wellness Week. Thank you to Mrs. Russell and Ms McMahon for providing such enjoyable sessions.

Mindful Nature Walk

Senior class pupils were paired with their junior class counterparts for this activity to add to the sense of community in our school. Pupils walked together to several points around our school and answered a question at each point that involved one of their five senses “sight, sound, smell, taste and touch”. Our sensory garden, track, pitch, and large outdoor space were well-covered during this activity.      😀👏
